Football: Former FHS Coach Fred Goldsmith named head coach at Lenoir-Rhyne (11/28/06) Former Franklin High football coach Fred Goldsmith has been named the new head coach at Lenoir-Rhyne. Goldsmith replaces Wayne Hicks who was released of his duties on November 14th following a 3-8 season. Hicks compiled a 17-36 record during his five years (2002-2006) at L-R. Goldsmith led the Panthers to a school record 47 wins (15 losses, 75.8% winning percentage) during his six seasons as head coach (2000-2005). Before FHS, Goldsmith guided the Duke Blue Devils to a 17-39 record (30.0%) from 1994-1998. Prior to Duke, Goldsmith rejuvenated a Rice University program that was 11-66 the previous seven seasons before he arrived. At Rice, Goldsmith compiled a 23-31-1 (42.0%) record, which included back-to-back 6-5 records during his last two years. The Bears will have some additional Franklin flavor to their coaching staff as Mike Houston and Blake Harrell, both FHS graduates, are expected to be added as assistants to Goldsmith. Harrell will be relinquishing his defensive coordinator position at Franklin High, while Houston will be letting go of his assistant head coach/defensive coordinator duties at Brevard College. Prior to BC, Houston compiled a 42-18 record during his five seasons as head coach of the T.C. Roberson Rams (2001-2005). Best of luck to Coach G, Coach Houston and Coach Harrell!
