2006 All-Western North Carolina Football Team announced (12/21/06)

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Zack Jaynes, Pisgah, Senior, Quarterback - Jaynes completed 198 of his 301 passes to lead Western North Carolina quarterbacks in both passing yards (3,198) and touchdowns (34), while throwing only 11 interceptions. Jaynes also rushed for 582 yards and 13 touchdowns.

 

Jaynes guided the Black Bears (13-1) to their first conference championship since 1994 and first undefeated regular season in 30 years. Shelby beat Pisgah, 28-20, in the NCHSAA 2-AA Western Regional championship game, but Jaynes passed for 315 yards and two touchdowns in his final game at Pisgah Memorial Stadium.

 

COACH OF THE YEAR

Skooter McCoy, Cherokee - In his second season with the Braves, McCoy led a team that finished the season with only three seniors to Cherokee’s first Smoky Mountain Conference championship in school history, the 1-A school’s first conference football title of any kind in 25 years and a 12-1 record. McCoy inherited a struggling program in 2005 that was coming off a 3-9 season.

 

Since McCoy has been coach, the Braves have gone 24-3.

 

ALL-WNC FIRST TEAM

 

Terrance Kincaid, McDowell, Junior, Running Back - One year after missing the majority of his sophomore season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, Kincaid earned All-Northwestern Conference honors by rushing for an area-high 2,156 yards and 20 touchdowns. His yardage is a single-season record at McDowell.

 

Justin Wynn, Roberson, Junior, Running Back - Wynn was named the Mountain Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and the Rams’ most valuable offensive player after rushing for 1,992 yards and 21 touchdowns. Wynn ran for 191 yards and three touchdowns when Roberson pounded MAC co-champion Asheville High, 35-13, on Oct. 6.

 

Josh Cockrell, Pisgah, Senior, Receiver - Cockrell earned All-Western Athletic Conference honors after making an area-high 75 receptions for 1,311 yards and 16 touchdowns. He was the first Pisgah receiver in school history to have a 1,000-yard season. Cockrell’s final touchdown with the Black Bears came Dec. 1 on a 77-yard screen pass from Zack Jaynes just 20 seconds into the NCHSAA 2-AA Western Regional championship game against Shelby.

 

Derrick Overholt, Polk County, Junior, Receiver - Overholt earned All-Western Highlands Conference honors after making 49 receptions for 941 yards and 13 touchdowns. On defense, Overholt also made 90 tackles (15 for a loss), six interceptions, three fumble recoveries and seven pass deflections. Finally, when starting quarterback Austin Ollis was injured, Overholt filled in by passing for 306 yards and four touchdowns.

 

Thumper Rattler, Cherokee, Senior, Tight End - Rattler shared the Smoky Mountain Conference Lineman of the Year award with Murphy’s Ryan Stiles after helping Braves junior Langston Wood rush for 1,955 yards and 28 touchdowns. Cherokee put up 40.6 points a game en route to its first Smoky Mountain Conference championship. Rattler made only two receptions for 34 yards, but both catches were for touchdowns. One of them was a 19-yard reception from Zack Hicks that helped give Cherokee a 8-6 win over Rosman on Oct. 20. Rattler made a WNC-best 191 combined tackles on defense.

 

Cody Corn, Tuscola, Senior, OL - Corn earned All-Mountain Athletic Conference honors after consistently grading out in the 80s all season for the Mountaineers. Corn was the only area player selected to play in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas all-star game, which was held Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C.

 

Chad Harris, Brevard, Junior, OL - Harris earned All-Western Athletic Conference honors after making 13 pancake blocks and helping allow two different Blue Devils backs — Quentin Robinson (1,386 yards, 17 touchdowns) and Nathan Norman (1,040 yards, 12 touchdowns – to rush for 1,000 or more yards. He has started for three years for the Blue Devils.

 

Adam Maybin, East Henderson, Senior, OL - Maybin earned All-Western Athletic Conference honors after his blocking helped senior Jared Quinn set a school record

for passing yards in a game and season.

 

Josh Stewart, Franklin, Senior, OL - Stewart earned All-Mountain Athletic Conference honors after allowing the Panthers to average 29 points and 293 yards a game. He is a repeat All-MAC and All-WNC selection.

 

Ryan Stiles, Murphy, Junior, OL - Stiles shared the Smoky Mountain Conference Lineman of the Year award with Cherokee’s Thumper Rattler after helping the Bulldogs average 343 yards of offense a game. Stiles also made 116 tackles and six sacks on defense.

 

Justin McCray, Brevard, Senior, Kicker - McCray was named the Co-Western Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Year after making 47 of his 50 extra-point attempts and 13 of 22 field goal attempts. McCray made two field goals more than 50 yards and kicked the ball inside an opponents’ 25-yard line 25 times on pooch kicks.

 

Adam Banks, Reynolds, Senior, DL - Banks was named the Northwestern Conference Defensive Player of the Year after making 165 tackles (90 solo) and 27 tackles for a loss. Banks has committed to play college football at Duke.

 

Tony Cabral, Reynolds, Sophomore, DL - Cabral earned All-Northwestern Conference honors after making 88 tackles and 21 tackles for a loss for the Rockets, who advanced to the third round of the 4-A playoffs.

 

Rusty Dayton, Pisgah, Senior, DL - Dayton earned All-Western Athletic Conference honors after grading out at 91 percent, the highest mark given to any Black Bears lineman. Dayton made 31 solo tackles (seven for a loss) and three sacks. He was also one of Pisgah’s top offensive linemen, grading out at 89 percent for the season with nine pancake blocks and 16 knockdown blocks. He did not allow an opponent to sack quarterback Zack Jaynes all season.

 

Quinn Kirkland, Asheville, Senior, DL - Kirkland earned All-Mountain Athletic Conference honors after making 92.5 tackles (62 solo), eight tackles for a loss and three sacks.

 

Ryan Shipman, Erwin, Senior, DL - Shipman earned All-Mountain Athletic Conference honors after making 67 tackles and 11 sacks. He was part of a Warriors defense that posted its first multi-shutout season in 18 years. Erwin returned to the NCHSAA 3-A playoffs for the first time since 2002.

 

Rudy Cabral, Reynolds, Sophomore, LB - Cabral earned All-Northwestern Conference honors after making 148 tackles (84 solo) and 24 tackles for a loss.

 

Michael Carson, Franklin, Senior, LB - Carson was named the Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year after making a team-high 80 tackles to go along with five sacks and three interceptions. Carson finished his career as the top tackler in Franklin history with 268 to his credit.

 

Chad Holby, Reynolds, Senior, LB - Holby earned All-Northwestern Conference honors after making 140 tackles (73 solo), 11 tackles for a loss and on interception.

 

Jonathan Owen, Brevard, Senior, LB - Owen was named the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year for a second straight season after making 163 combined tackles.

 

Josh Gossett, Roberson, Junior, DB - Gossett earned All-Mountain Athletic Conference honors after making 118 tackles, a sack and three tackles for a loss. A knee injury ended his season prematurely for the second year in a row but not before Gossett earned the Rams’ hardest-hitter award.

 

Justin Wilson, Pisgah, Senior, DB - Wilson earned All-Western Athletic Conference honors after making 101 tackles and causing five fumbles, to go along with six fumble recoveries and three interceptions. Wilson was also one of quarterback Zack Jaynes’ favorite targets, hauling in 25 receptions for 467 yards and 10 touchdowns. On special teams, Wilson averaged 20.1 yards on kick returns and 19 yards on punt returns.

 

Grant Schallock, Smoky Mountain, Senior, Punter - Schallock was named the Co-Western Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Year after averaging 39 yards a punt. Kicking-wise, Schallock made 18 of his 19 extra-point attempts and six of 11 field goals. Schallock hit three field goals in the second half of a 16-14 upset over West Henderson on Oct. 27.

 

Ross Farrar, Owen, Senior, Special Teams - Farrar earned All-Western Highlands Conference honors and was named Owen’s most valuable player after returning four kicks for touchdowns — two kickoffs and two punts. Farrar had four games in which he posted more than 350 yards in all-purpose years. Farrar also rushed for a team-high 1,450 yards and 14 touchdowns on offense.

 

Rahkeem Morgan, Asheville, Junior, Athlete - Morgan earned All-Mountain Athletic Conference honors after leading the co-champion Cougars in passing (1,223 yards with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions) and rushing (627 yards, five touchdowns). As a defensive back, Morgan made 42 tackles and recovered a fumble.
